ENGLISH 7
QW: Advice from Former 7th-Grader-- Gets yours! Read it. Summarize it. Then write, what will you do this year?
After you finish writing, write YOUR personal plan for succeeding in English class this year. Write in pen and put your name on the post-it.

*Seventh Grade questions. Notebook on desk for check-in.
* Diagnostic Writing Assignment -- Rough draft due Monday.
Final draft due Tuesday.
* Worktime -- Spelling and/or begin rough draft of writing assignment.

HW: Fri: Spelling Unit 1, p. 15, exercises 1-20 and a quiz. Do work in notebooks
Mon: RD Writing Assignment
Tues: FD (Final draft) writing assignment


ENGLISH 8
A place to start. Benchmark Essay. You’ll do the same essay in May to see how much you have improved! Get chromebook and a piece of paper to brainstorm. You are required to brainstorm and turn in that brainstorm..
Get the prompt. Go to the class website and the link for the Benchmark essay. Click on it. Copy the essay prompt to the document that you create and begin work. 
Or, keep one screen open with the essay assignment and the other with your work. 
Your choice. No printed copies of the assignment. 
Title your essay, Benchmark Prompt. THIS PERIOD ONLY. Work only in your English folder.

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
