ENGLISH 7
Spelling. Unit 7, checked in sentences and completed quiz.
 Return to paragraph and topic sentence work. Finish work on body sentences on p. 2. Skip p. 3. Complete p. 4. (not the challenge on p. 4.) When you are up to page 5, get a Chromebook and re-write that paragraph on bagels, so the sentences are in proper order. Write it in your English folder. Complete the paragraph for homework if not done in class.

HW: Monday--Completed scrambled paragraph in English folder, from p.5 of paragraph packet.

Friday: First quarter ends. Turn in unused late passes for extra credit.


ENGLISH 8
Finishing Cats/Dogs essay. 
See the results. First the organizer. Then the essay. How did you do?
Handed out novel, The Hunger Games. Name in book in ink and sign the clipboard. Bring it with you every day.

QW: PROMPT #1: Popular Books --Books like The Hunger Games, Harry Potter have become nothing short of a cultural phenomenon. People of all ages have quickly become entwined in the stories and the characters that these books deliver. Why do you think that these popular kinds of novels have hit it big with mass crowds? What is it that people find so appealing in these types of books?

After many years as a newspaper reporter and writer, a job that I was lucky enough to love, I got my English teaching credential, hoping to pass on to kids how to find their unique voice and clearly communicate what they think and feel. Public school educated in Philadelphia, college in New York City (Barnard College), transferred to and graduated from UC Berkeley in English and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. Yay, my son, my student in 8th grade, is now a Cal alumni, too, a 2017 graduate with a degree in computer science, now working at Google (You Tube) as a product manager. William Faulkner is one of my favorite writers, as well as Anne Lamott, Langston Hughes and many of the nighttime, satirical comedy shows. On my top bookshelf sit Nobel Prize winning writers Toni Morrison and Orhan Pamuk, along with friends who have won Pulitzer Prizes in journalism, who started writing in junior high or in writing groups in Sonoma County. Go public education in California!
